California is blessed with many fine state parks and this is one of them and the largest in the state. It has a variety of areas from Badlands to Sandy washes to mountain high desert. Some people would call it the Colorado desert or the Sonoran desert you're almost on the western fringes of that area with Palm Springs. Basically you're in a desert environment so you have to be aware of having your own gear to survive if you need to. Common sense, you need to wear sunscreen and bring plenty of bottled water available and some sleeping gear in case your car gets stuck or broke. I would also recommend a basic first aid kit and of course some kind of cactus kit including needle nose pliers tweezers maybe duct tape to remove cactus needles.
The Anza-Borrego Dessert is absolutely beautiful! It is truly a remarkable experience walking through this area. I felt I was in an old western film and could not stop taking pictures of the scenic nature all around.
Be prepared for the heat, especially if you are coming from a coastal city. It's very dry so it might not feel so hot at first, but after walking around a bit, you'll feel it. Bring lot of water! There are a few restaurants about half a mile from the visitors center so there are places to dine either after your visit or before.
This is becoming a popular destination for SoCal locals and tourists . If you haven't been yet just go it's definitely a new memory in the books. You could spend a couple hours out here or a full day. Highly recommend Galleta Meadows!
This is a little known treasure and a fun way to see nature. It looks like you had a great time and a new way to see California.
