With Christmas just around the corner, many of us will be trying to find the perfect destination in which to spend the holidays, whether it’s a luxury trip abroad or a staycation at home in the UK.
We think there is no better Christmas destination than the Lake District! With crisp winter air, plenty of quintessential English villages to explore, and more sheep than you can shake a stick at, the Lakes encompasses everything that a traditional British Christmas could hope for.
Here, we’ve found three reasons why you should opt for a Christmas break in the Lakes during the holiday season, so you can make the most of this magical place.
Festive activities
The whole country goes into overdrive during the Christmas period and the Lake District is no different, with festive events taking place throughout the region this year.
You can find lots of traditional Christmas events to visit, including Christmas markets in most large towns. These markets provide the perfect opportunity to purchase local artisan wares from the area and try some wonderful Lake District produce, including the famous Grasmere Gingerbread, Herdwick wool products, and any number of items from the region’s many distilleries.
If shopping isn’t your thing, you can catch a local carol service in churches throughout the Lake District, or head to Rheged to watch a screening of the beautiful festive ballet, The Nutcracker.
For those travelling with little ones, you’ll be sure to find something to entertain them: Muncaster Castle is holding a range of festive events, whilst the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway is holding their annual Santa Express.
Scenery
The Lake District is renowned for its stunning scenery and this really comes into its own during the winter period. With snow-capped peaks, misty lakes, and frosty farmyard animals, the Lakes offers a stunning backdrop to any Christmas holiday.
You can enjoy this breathtaking landscape from the comfort of a cozy pub or challenge yourself by climbing some of the fells and mountains of the area to get a bird's eye view of your surroundings. Either way, those festive photographs have never looked better!

Accommodation
As the area is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, drawing around 18.5 million visitors annually, it’s little wonder that it’s also host to some amazing accommodation.
For those looking for a bit of luxury during their stay, boutique hotels like the Lake District Country Hotels are a great Christmas option, as many hotels offer festive packages for the season.
Alternatively, renting a log cabin could be the perfect choice for those travelling in a larger group or wanting to extend their stay. With roaring fires, a host of amenities, modern furnishings, and close proximity to the great outdoors, what could be more Christmassy? (Oh, and you might even get a hot tub!)
We hope this has given you some inspiration for your Christmas break and a small glimpse of what the region has to offer this holiday season!
