The Midwest isn’t usually first on people’s travel wish list; however, with a rich history, plenty of natural scenery, and places of interest to enjoy, you shouldn’t dismiss it. Nestled between Missouri and Mississippi; the state of Iowa is no different and has an array of things for the keen explorer to enjoy. Whether you’re after rolling landscapes and natural havens, or want a cultural fix of museums and architecture; Iowa has everything on offer. The following are some travel tips and ideas for those who are considering a midwestern adventure and want to experience the best that the state of Iowa has to give them.

Nature Parks And Attractions

Whether you like to hike, enjoy eating a picnic with a beautiful view, or are a keen landscape or nature photographer; you’ll find plenty of places in Iowa to satiate your needs. Take a trip out to Ledges State Park to enjoy an array of trails to trek through, campsites where you can sleep under the stars, and plenty of sandstone cliffs along Pease Creek. The creek offers countless opportunities to splash (perfect for kids), freshen up, or relax and listen to the sound of the water.

The Loess Hills National Scenic Byway, on the western edge of Iowa, will give you prairies, forests, parks, and some incredible views; definitely one to take your camera to. If you fancy driving to and through your breathtaking views; hire or take your car along The Great River Road. The clue’s in the name, but the river offers awe-inspiring vistas, and there are towns, shops, and places of interest along the way.

A Peaceful Lake Escape

The Iowa Great Lakes will give you a laid back retreat with the option of enjoying time on the water sailing and fishing, or simply spending your time lakeside with a great book. Find some accommodation nearby your preferred lake destination, and head down to the water when you want to escape the hustle and bustle of a city or town.

The Holiday Inn Express Mason City is situated under seven miles from the beautiful Clear Lake, where you can partake in activities during every season; including skating, fishing, biking, and viewing the wildlife. The lakes are perfect for families, solo travelers, and romantic enough for a couple’s getaway, so pop them on your itinerary as you head towards the Midwest.

Culture, Architecture, And Museums

If you’re heading to the capital Des Moines; you’ll discover historic architecture, galleries and museums, and all the cultural attractions you’d expect from a vibrant city. There is the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park, which houses more than two-dozen sculptures worth over $40 million; visit at night when they’re lit-up and a feast for the eyes. You shouldn’t dismiss the little towns either; Decorah has a rich Scandinavian history, and it’s reflected in the buildings, shops, and bakeries within the town, so visit and treat yourself to something tasty as you take a stroll around.

Wherever you head in Iowa; your list of activities could end up pretty long, so you might have to keep heading back to enjoy it all.
